Grant’s Tomb

Grant’s Tomb

The granite and marble structure was completed in 1897 designed by architect John Duncan. Over a million people attended Grant’s funeral parade in 1885. The parade for the dedication ceremony of the tomb, held April 27, 1897, the 75th anniversary of Grant’s birth, was almost as large and was headed by President William McKinley. New York City was chosen as the burial site so that Mrs. Grant could visit frequently, and because Grant was grateful to New Yorkers for their outpouring of affection during his later years.

I’m impressed with the structure of grant’s tomb.

Big Monument located in the park of Riverside.

Scale was pretty big, more than I expected. It is the largest mausoleum in North America.

The completed structure includes a main lobby, overlooking a sanctuary in which grant and his wife is entombed.

It made me feel honor about him in silent atmosphere.

Exterior of grant’s tomb was also huge. And also, design of architecture was very detail.

Two sculptures of eagle something like that which is on both side of stairs were outstanding.

Around there you can find some benches made of mosaic.

It was unforgettable experience!

What to do in the area:

When you are done with the visit of Grant’s Tomb, you can enjoy the beautiful area!

First, you can walk around Riverside Park and take a look at the view of the Hudson River.

Then, visit Riverside Church which is just next to the park. This is an interracial and international church in New York City. A lot of famous people such as Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, had given speeches in it.

And if you have enough time, you should go to Columbia University.

It’s not that far from Grant’s Tomb

General Grant National Memorial is located near the intersection of Riverside Drive and West 122ndSt.

You have to take 1 subway train uptown direction and

get off at west 116th St Station at Broadway.Walk six blocks north and two blocks west.

Secret Garden.
